Social media
What is digital marketing?
Digital marketing isn’t just posting on Instagram. Here’s what it actually is, and why Ghanaian businesses that skip the strategy keep paying for it.
Ask ten business owners in Ghana what digital marketing is and most will say some version of "posting on Instagram". Some will say "boosting posts". A few will say "getting a website".
None of those answers is wrong. They're just incomplete. And that gap is costing businesses money every month.
Digital marketing is marketing. It just happens online.
Here's the simplest way I can put it. Marketing is how you understand who your customers are, what they need, and how to reach them with the right message at the right time. Digital marketing is doing all of that through online channels: search, social media, your website, email, WhatsApp, ads.
The channels are just the delivery. The marketing is everything that has to happen before anything gets posted.
When a business treats digital marketing as "someone to handle our page", it skips the part that actually makes the posts work.
Two mistakes I see all the time
Mistake one: confusing marketing with sales.
A lot of businesses hire a "marketer" when what they really want is a salesperson. They expect sales to start coming in next week, with no plan behind any of it. Sales is closing the deal. Marketing is making sure the right people already know you, trust you and want what you sell before that conversation even starts. Skip it, and your sales team ends up chasing cold leads that were never going to buy.
Mistake two: reducing digital marketing to social media management.
Posting every day isn't a strategy. Picture a boutique in Adum posting new arrivals daily and boosting a post whenever sales slow down. The page looks active. But nobody has asked who actually buys from them, where those people spend time online, or which posts brought in a single sale. So every month looks like the last one, just with more spent on boosts.
What real digital marketing looks like
Before any campaign goes live, the work starts with research:
- Who your customers are. Their age, where they live, what they care about, what makes them buy, and what stops them.
- Where you stand in your market. Who else sells what you sell, how they talk about it, and what makes you different.
- The language your customers use. The actual words they use when they describe their problem. When your posts and ads use those words, people feel understood.
Then comes the plan: which channels, what message, what you want people to do, and how you'll know if it worked.
And then the part most businesses skip: measuring it. Every campaign should tell you something. Which posts brought enquiries. Which ads brought sales. What to stop doing. That data shapes the next round, so your marketing gets sharper every month instead of starting from zero.
Where your website fits in
Social media platforms decide who sees your posts, and they change the rules whenever they like. Your website is the one place online you fully own. It's where people book, order and pay, and it's where you learn who your customers actually are. A good digital marketing strategy uses social media to bring people in, and your website to turn them into customers and understand them better.
So what should you do?
If your marketing right now is "post and hope", you don't need to post more. You need to step back and answer a few questions first:
- Who exactly are we trying to reach?
- What do they need to hear from us?
- Where do they spend their time online?
- How will we know what's working?
If you can't answer those yet, that's where to start.
